(FORT BEND COUNTY) - Fort Bend County Animal Services is warning the public after being made aware of a scam involving a man impersonating a shelter employee.
According to shelter representatives, several people have been called by a man with a stutter who claims to be from the shelter and has accurate information about the intended victim’s lost pet. The information is likely found online or from a poster. He tells the victim they can pay in advance to pick up their pet from the shelter, claiming the shelters “payment system is down.”
“He is giving accurate information about our phone number and location,” said shelter officials. “He will sometimes also say that your pet is injured and you need to pay the vet bill as well. We have had people call and come to the shelter because of this person in the hope that their lost pet is here. The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office is aware of this and has the cash app information.”
Anyone who receives a phone call like this should contact the FBCSO non-emergency line at 281-341-4665.
