Traffic Alert: Closures Along U.S. 59 Beginning This Week

(SUGAR LAND) – The Texas Department of Transportation will we performing construction on the main lanes of U.S. 59 beginning Oct. 21.


TxDOT will be replacing elastomeric bearing pads under the U.S. 59 bridge over Hwy. 90A. Elastomeric Bearing Pads are used in modern bridge construction with precast beams to minimize vibration of the structures and allow to the bridge to flex or move slightly as engineered. In addition to this repair, they will be performing some minor repairs to the freeway such as repairing guardrails, retaining walls and drainpipes.


First, TxDOT is planning a total closure of the northbound main lanes of U.S. 59 at Hwy. 90A on Friday, Oct. 21 at 9 p.m. through Monday Oct. 24 at 5 a.m. During this total closure, the detour will begin at the Hwy. 90A exit ramp, traveling northbound on the U.S. 59 feeder road, and will end at the U.S. 59 northbound entrance ramp before Kirkwood. During this closure the northbound U.S. 59 turnaround at Hwy. 90A will be closed.


Beginning Monday, Oct. 24, TxDOT will begin a nightly closure of the southbound main lanes of U.S. 59 at Hwy. 90A starting at 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. TxDOT anticipates two to three nightly closures of the southbound main lanes to complete the construction. During the southbound closure, the detour will begin at Hwy. 90A exit ramp, traveling southbound on U.S. 59 feeder road, and will end at U.S. 59 southbound entrance ramp before Dairy Ashford. During this closure the southbound U.S. 59 turnaround at Hwy. 90A will be closed.


Throughout the closures, TxDOT will have police officers at the feeder road intersection of U.S. 59 and Hwy. 90A controlling the signals to minimize traffic congestion from the detour. TxDOT has message boards in place communicating the anticipated closure.
